Prep roundup: Lyons volleyball nets first conference win
Alex Hojnar had eight kills and Jessi Skonning had seven in an 18-25, 25-22, 25-21 win over Downers Grove North on Sept. 24 to give Lyons Township's girls volleyball team its first conference win. The Lions went 3-2 at the Rich East Invitational over the weekend with wins over Andrew, Marian Catholic and Lincoln-Way West and losses to Lemont and Mother McAuley.
Last week RB picked up conference wins over Fenton (25-17, 25-16) and Ridgewood (25-9, 25-7).
The Roadrunners lost back-to-back East Suburban Catholic Conference matches last week to Benet and Marist.
The Bulldogs went 2-1 last week. On Sept. 25, RB beat University High School 2-1, but dropped a Metro Suburban Conference game 3-1 at Ridgewood the next day. The Ridgewood loss snapped a 10-game MSC winning streak for the Bulldogs dating back to 2011. On Saturday, RB got back on track with a 3-2 win at Proviso West.
The Chargers knocked off the Friars 1-0 on Thursday in a Chicago Catholic League match. The Friars tied Washington 1-1 on Saturday.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Kevin Faje paced the Bulldogs with a 17th-place finish as RB was sixth out of 14 teams at the Roy Gummerson Invitational hosted by Oak Park River Forest at Schiller Woods in Chicago, Saturday. Dan Curtin was 22nd.
The Mustangs were third out of 14 teams at the Roy Gummerson Invitational. Mateo Hernandez (15:41) was fourth. Andrew Paplaczyk was 15th and Robert Loris was 18th.
Jonathan Bareis was Naz's top runner at the Leyden Eagle Classic on Saturday by finishing in 15th. Naz was seventh in the 11-team field.
Anthony Rizzi was eighth at the Roy Gummerson Invitational on Saturday to help the Friars place 10th out of 14 teams.
Carlos Paiz was 54th at the Leyden Eagle Classic to lead the way for the Panthers.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
The Lions placed seventh out of 27 teams at the Palatine Invitational on Saturday. Lexy Rudolfski (24th) was the fastest LT runner.
Led by Mailin Struck's meet victory, the Bulldogs placed fifth out of 17 teams at the Roy Gummerson Invitational hosted by Oak Park River Forest at Schiller Woods in Chicago. Struck finished in 17:12.6 to win the meet by nearly 10 seconds. RB's Sarah Melone placed 15th.
The Mustangs won the Leyden Eagle Classic with three runners in the top five. Jalissa Stokes was third and was followed closely by Leslie Lopez and Tania Paez.
Claire Ramsey (19:54) and Colleen Cavanaugh (20:50) finished 1-2 in the Leyden Eagle Classic on Saturday. Meagan O'Kane was eighth and the Roadrunners were third out of seven teams.
Olivia Ryan led the Friars by finishing in fourth at the Roy Gummerson Invitational on Saturday. Fenwick placed fourth out of 17 teams.
Dan Hudson's 36 paced the Lions to a 151-166 win over Naperville Central on Thursday. The Lions then won their own quad on Saturday with a 316 to beat Naz, Fenwick and St. Ignatius.
RB dropped two Metre Suburban Conference matches last week. On Sept. 24, MSC leader Glenbard South beat the Bulldogs 159-197. Two days later, Illiana Christian beat RB 161-195. Austin Adamec had the Bulldogs' best round in both matches with a 41. RB finished with a 2-4 MSC record heading into Wednesday's conference meet at Sanctuary Golf Course in New Lenox.
With a 327, the Roadrunners finished only behind host Lyons Township at a quad meet on Saturday. Andrew Dobis was fourth at the tournament.
The Friars placed third at the Lyons Township quad with a score of 348.
The Bulldogs rebounded from a 4-3 loss to Illiana Christian on Sept. 24 by beating Fenton 6-1 on Thursday and taking first in the RB Invite on Saturday. Riki Matous and Claire Wilson won the 'A' doubles draw to help the Bulldogs edge past Addison Trail, Elk Grove and Plainfield Central.
Laura Gutierrez made the final of the singles draw and the Friars won the Lincoln-Way North Invite on Saturday.
Katie Dougherty broke 40 for the first time in her career with a 39 for medalist honors in a 170-199 win over York on Sept. 25. A day later LT lost to Sandburg 158-168.
Eleanor Ahlberg led the Bulldogs in a 215-252 loss to Plainfield Central at Mistwood Golf Club on Thursday. Ahlberg had the fourth lowest round of the match.
