BERWYN – The Morton boys soccer team was originally scheduled to take part in the Pepsi Showdown final at Toyota Park on Sunday, but the game was moved back a week.

The stadium was previously scheduled to host another boys soccer game on Sunday, St. Ignatius vs. Lake Park. That game was set for 2 p.m. after what was supposed to be the noon start of the Morton-Lane Tech game.

Ignatius and Lake Park played on Sunday while Morton and Lane Tech will wait to decide the tournament winner. The new time for the Pepsi Showdown championship game is now 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6.

Lane Tech had already moved a Saturday game to avoid playing back-to-back games ahead of the big final. Morton decided to keep its Saturday game with Neuqua Valley.

Morton head coach Mike Caruso said the Mustangs originally planned to send a JV lineup against the Wildcats, but without the Pepsi final coming the next day, Caruso put out a full lineup and the Wildcats are probably wishing he didn’t. Morton won 7-0 by scoring six second-half goals.

“If we finish chances like we’re supposed to, that’s what we’re capable of,” Caruso said.

The blowout victory capped off a 4-0 week for the Mustangs, which started with a 4-0 win over Proviso West on Monday and continued with 1-0 wins over Leyden and West Chicago later in the week. Chabello Marquez scored the lone goal against West Chicago on Thursday.
