BROOKFIELD – Nearly 3,600 runners and walkers leaped like gazelles at the Brookfield Zoo's Zoo Run Run for the Conservation Fund 5K on Sept. 22.
The course led participants through an forest of 100-year-old forest of oak trees, past Andean condors near The Living Coast exhibit and by giraffes, zebras and camels along 31st Street, before a final stretch as runners breezed by lions, tigers and snow leopards.
The overall male winner was Christopher Schiel, of Schaumburg, with a time of 17:49, and the overall female winner was Jane Simpson, of Western Springs, with a time of 19:40.
Kristen Meyer, of Western Springs, was the second place winner in the female 14 and under age category with a finishing time of 21:57.
Runners competed in 13 age categories that ranged from 14 years old to over 70.
