'Houby Day' in on the mark Oct. 3
CICERO – It's that time of year again when the venerable mushroom is on everyone from Berwyn and Cicero minds.
The 45th annual Houby Festival is underway.
Named "Houby" after the Czech and Slovak word for "mushrooms," the Houby festivities began in 1968 in celebration of the heritage of the many Cicero residents of Czech and Slovak decent.
The festival continues as one of the town's most esteemed annual events to this day, and has gone on to encompass numerous cultures and backgrounds.
The Houby Festival and Carnival will be held from Oct. 3 to 6 at the L Strip, located behind businesses on the north side of Cermak Road from Lombard to Austin avenues.
The festival will feature live music from Infinity and 7th Heaven.
The Houby Day Parade — featuring the recently-crowned Houby Queen — will kick off on Sunday at noon.
The official Kick-off of the Houby Fest will be Tuesday at Central Federal Savings, Austin Avenue and Cermak Road beginning at 11 a.m.
