Cicero gang member faces weapons, drug charges

CICERO – A 28-year-old known gang member from Cicero faces several charges, according to police, including felony assault and felony weapons possession near an elementary school following a disturbance at 24th Street and 61st Avenue at 11:23 p.m. Sept. 20.

Police were responding to a gang disturbance near the intersection when they observed a suspect walking up to a parked car and followed him.

Police noticed David Viveros, 28, of the 4900 block of 23rd Place, who was sitting in the car, moving around as though he was trying to conceal something. Ordered out of the car, police then found a small amount of marijuana.

Police Supt. Bernard Harrison said Viveros, who holds a valid Illinois Firearms Owners Identification Card and is a known member of the Gangster Disciples street gang, was sitting on the curb after he was searched when police discovered he was holding a loaded 5-shot miniature .22 magnum revolver in his hand. He was immediately disarmed by police and taken in for questioning.

Viveros related to police through his attorney he knew where to find six other guns in an alley near his home. Police recovered three semi-auto pistols, two revolvers and a civilian version of a military-style rifle.

Viveros was also charged with one felony and one misdemeanor count of drug possession, and a misdemeanor for resisting arrest.

Town President Larry Dominick reaffirmed the Town's position that it will not be intimidated by street gangs.

"We will not allow these street gang members to be hanging around a school with weapons and drugs," Dominick said. "The weapons in his possession have only one purpose and that is to kill people."
