Hilltoppers handle LT after giving up big play

WESTERN SPRINGS – For one play the Glenbard West defense got burned, but after that, the Hilltoppers dominated Lyons Township.

LT running back Leonard Ross took the first play from scrimmage for an 80-yard touchdown run down the right sideline, but he managed just five yards the rest of the game and the Hilltoppers won, 44-7, for a West Suburban Silver road win Friday night.

“We just were star struck a little bit,” said West coach Chad Hetlet. “I don’t know where their heads were, but we talked about all week how great of a running back that kid was. It wasn’t a surprise he was that good. I can’t explain it, but we woke up after that.”

The Hilltoppers (3-1, 2-0 WSS) survived three turnovers on offense and eventually senior running back Scott Andrews took over. Andrews ran for 206 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries.

After West took a 9-7 lead on a safety from a high punt snap on the first play of the second quarter, Andrews ran for a 1-yard touchdown and quarterback Drew Vogg connected with tight end Connor Schrauth for an 11-yard TD in the final three minutes of the half to build some separation.

Andrews added two more scores in the third quarter and the West defense dominated its side of the ball after allowing Ross’ big run.

“We had to come back from that,” linebacker Jordan Hassan said. “We had to forget that play, especially me because that was to my side.

“We gathered ourselves well and we came back pretty strong, I think.”

Since allowing 17 in a loss to Wheaton Warrenville South in Week 1, the defense has allowed just 14 points combined in three games. LT (1-3, 0-1) entered averaging just over 38 points per game.

“A lot of athletes out there for LT and they’ve been scoring a lot of points this year so I was really happy with the way our defense played,” Hetlet said.

The Hilltoppers have another Silver test upcoming when they host Hinsdale Central (3-1, 2-0) in a battle of early conference leaders Saturday at Duchon Field.
