Coming off a freshman campaign that saw Russell Matos finish in a tie for 12th place at the IHSA Class 2A state meet, the only question was what the Glenbard South sophomore could do for an encore. This fall, Matos has seemingly picked up where he left off and last week, just three days after carding five birdies at the Rockford East Invite, he posted another five birdies in shooting a four-under round of 32 in a dual meet against Ridgewood. Matos, the Glen Ellyn Bank and Trust Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Scott Schmid about his special round and how the season has gone thus far, both for him and the team.
Can you remember having a better round where your whole game was working well?
It’s the best round I’ve had in nine holes in a while. I really felt comfortable with my swing and I was hitting everything how I wanted to. And I was putting well, also.
Are you pleased with how your golf game has been so far?
I’m really happy with the progress this high school season, both individually and as a team. Hopefully we can keep it up.
Team-wise, where do you guys stand currently?
We are undefeated in conference, and I feel like we are going to be good come the regional, sectional and state.
What are the goals for the next couple of weeks as you get ready for the state series?
I hope to keep my game in top shape. I want to be playing well coming into regionals and then peak there.
