OAK BROOK – A Downers Grove man has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-car crash early Sunday morning that killed a Hinsdale man, according to the Oak Brook Police Department.

The driver of the car, William Decero, 49, 5425 Washington St., Downers Grove, was arrested and charged after being transported to an area hospital, police said.

Thomas Fitzsimons, 48, of Hinsdale was killed in the crash, the DuPage County Coroner's Office said. He was confirmed dead at the scene near Spring Road and Salt Creek Circle in Oak Brook, police said.

It is further alleged that Decero, who was driving Fitzsimons’ car, lost control, swerved off the road and crashed the car into a wooded area, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

Following a 911 call from a neighbor, authorities from the Oak Brook Police Department arrived at the scene and found both men still in the car wearing their seatbelts. Fitzsimons was pronounced dead at the scene and Decero was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries, according to the release.

Decero's bond was set at $750,000. One count of aggravated DUI involving death is a Class 2 felony punishable by up to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, according to the State's Attorney's Office.

Decero’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.
