Brookfield Zoo's 'Baboon Island' closed, faces wrecking ball in 2014

BROOKFIELD - Brookfield Zoo's Baboon Island has been closed and will be demolished next year after 76 years of serving as a home for numerous animals, Zoo officials announced Friday.

A new, as yet to be determined exhibit, will be built on the site.

On Sept. 12, the Zoo's last three baboons were euthanized for what officials said were "quality of life concerns." The Zoo's baboon breeding program was discontinued in 1992 , the same year the last baboon was born.

Bill Zeigler, senior vice president of collections and animal care at the Chicago Zoological Society, stated in a press release while nothing has been confirmed, "we are certain that it will be equally engaging, will connect our guests with wildlife and nature, and will encourage conservation in our increasingly challenged natural world."

Brookfield Zoo is owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.
