DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove South mounted a second half comeback on Friday night, scoring 21 unanswered points to beat Morton 21-14.
It was a tale of two halves for Downers South (2-2), who could muster little first half offense and trailed 14-0 going into the locker room. But quarterback Jordan Skach and wide receiver Javon Turner led a third quarter Mustang charge, connecting on two long passing plays.
Downers South drove 72 yards in their first possession of the second half, which was capped off by a 53-yard touchdown strike from Skach to Turner. The duo connected again on their next possesion, completing a 72-yard pass following a fake double reverse.
In the fourth quarter, after Morton (1-3) was stonewalled on fourth down play at the Downers five yard line, Skach led the offense down the field and running back Alec Arvanitakis pounded through a herd of defenders and into the endzone for a touchdown.
Morton's final drive then sputtered at the opposition's 13 yard line, turning the ball over on downs with just three seconds remaining.
Morton quarterback Emilio Engle accounted for both of the team's scores, including a 72 yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Next, Downers Grove South will travel to Franklin Park to play Leydon while Morton will try to rebound when they play at home against Willowbrook. Both games kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 27.
