BOLINGBROOK – The VCA Bolingbrook Animal Hospital opened its doors Saturday, allowing residents to slip on latex gloves, fasten the surgical masks and catch a glimpse of a day in the life of a local veterinarian.

VCA Bolingbrook staff showcased an open house, touring residents through the facility’s medical wings and leading various informational demonstrations.

VCA Bolingbrook Hospital Manager Lynn King explains that residents are typically restricted from entering the back of the 1,800-square-foot facility.

“Most pet owners don’t really know what it means when we say ‘take your dog or cat in the back,’” King said. “Seeing what actually happens and speaking to our vets and staff puts their mind at ease.”

During the tour, attendees not only saw “the back,” but also the facility’s dental suite, pharmaceutical area, surgical prep station and cat room. They viewed animal blood samples, X-rays and saw a variety of items removed from pets’ bellies.

Afterwards, as children fraternized with some of the on-hand canine and feline residents, parents were able to ask the veterinarians an array of questions.

The VCA open house event is just part of the overall VCA client experience, according to King.

“From the time that our clients walk in, we do everything we can to make sure they feel like they are part of the vet team,” King said. “It’s important that the clients know that their pets are safe and that the doctors treat the animals like it’s their own pet.”

Following each appointment, VCA staff keeps in touch with owners via phone calls, answering questions to alleviate concerns, and sending out magnets and hand-written cards, King added.

A Bolingbrook staple for more than two decades, the VCA Bolingbrook Animal Hospital offers general practice for dogs and cats, including wellness visits, vaccines, simple surgeries, dental exams, grooming, boarding, doggy daycare, basic primary care, diagnostic check-ups, geriatric procedures and intensive care.

The facility, located at 570 Concord Lane, currently employs a staff of 22 people and four veterinarians.
