Glenbard West shakes off slow start to rout LT
Hilltoppers score final 44 points in 44-7 win
WESTERN SPRINGS – On the first play from scrimmage Lyons Township running back Leonard Ross scored on an 80-yard touchdown, but after that it was all Glenbard West.
The Hilltoppers’ defense shut down the Lions the rest of the way and West won 44-7 to improve to 3-1 and 2-0 in the West Suburban Silver.
“We just were star struck a little bit,” said West coach Chad Hetlet of the first play score. “I don’t know where their heads were, but we talked about all week how great of a running back that kid was. It wasn’t a surprise he was that good. I can’t explain it, but we woke up after that.”
Quarterback Drew Vogg threw an interception on the Hilltoppers’ first possession, but the defense forced a three-and-out and Levonte Jones tied the game with a seven-yard run on West’s next drive.
The Hilltoppers took the lead on a low snap on a punt that resulted in a safety on the first play of the second quarter. West scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the half and then running back Scott Andrews scored two third quarter touchdowns to put the game away.
Andrews ran for 206 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead West’s offense.
Ross was limited to just five yards on his remaining nine carries.
“Everybody knows about Leonard and they come flying,” said LT coach Kurt Weinberg. “They were pinching in and getting after us a little bit and took it to us. Offensively we just didn’t get any kind of rhythm going.”
The Hilltoppers will host Hinsdale Central next Saturday. LT (1-3, 0-1 WSS) travels to Downers Grove North 7:30 p.m. Friday.
