Prep roundup: RB girls volleyball nets Maine East tourney title

After losing conference matches to Timothy Christian and Glenbard South during the week, the Bulldogs won Maine East’s Demon Invite over the weekend. RB went 5-0 with wins over Leyden, Niles West, Trinity, Warren and Stagg. Sophomore setter Olivia Gyssler made her first varsity starts during the tournament and ran the 5-1 offense for RB.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Nazareth

The strong season for the Roadrunners continued with wins over Oak Park-River Forest (25-16, 25-13) and West Chicago (25-19, 25-13) last week. Emma Decker had 20 assists, Sam Brown seven kills and three aces , and Julia Saunders had six kills against West Chicago. Nazareth entered Tuesday’s showdown at Benet with an 11-0 record.

BOYS SOCCER

Riverside Brookfield

RB picked up its first win of the season by beating Illiana Christian, 6-1, Thursday. The Bulldogs fell to 1-6-3 with a 3-0 loss to Brother Rice two days later.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners beat Chicago Christian, 3-2, on Thursday.

Fenwick

The Friars finished 0-3-1 at the Pepsi Showdown. They lost to Metea Valley, 2-1, on penalty kicks in the first round and then lost to Whitney Young, 3-2, and Niles West, 3-0, before tying Lake Zurich, 1-1,on Saturday.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Riverside Brookfield

RB won its own Sundown Meadows Invite on Friday thanks to five runners finishing in the top-10. Kevin Faje (third), Spencer Purcell (fifth), Dan Curtin (sixth) and Matt Sagan (seventh) finished in under 15:40. Kyle Georgopolous was ninth.

Morton

The Mustangs made the trip to a crowded Detweiller Park in Peoria for the Richard Spring Invitational and placed 55th out of 63 teams. Michael Kelly was Morton’s top runner with a time of 16:46, good for 256th place.

Nazareth

Johnny Bareis (eighth, 17:02) was Naz’s top runner at the Riverside Brookfield Invitational on Friday.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Lyons Township

The Lions’ lineup of younger runners won the Argo Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Kiley Groat won the race with a time of 19:22.2 and classmate Olivia Dallavo was second. Freshman Colleen O’Connell was fourth.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs placed second in the pre-conference meet for Metro Suburban Conference teams Sept. 17. Mailin Struck won the race. On Friday RB hosted the Sundown Meadows Invite and took first place ahead of Nazareth. Struck won again and was followed by Sarah Melone in second. Meaghan Dorsey, Clare Bollnow and Amy Wagner also cracked the top-10.

Morton

The Mustangs were second out of 17 teams at the Argo Invitational on Saturday. Julissa Stokes was eighth and Tania Paez was 12th.

Nazareth

Gianna Levato led the Roadrunners to second place at the Riverside Brookfield Invitational on Friday. Levato was fourth and was followed by teammates Claire Ramsey, Colleen Cavanaugh and Meg O’Kane across the finish line in that order.

BOYS GOLF

Riverside Brookfield

On Sept. 17 the Bulldogs beat Elmwood Park 169-191. Peter Smith and Austin Adamec each shot a 41 for RB.

Morton

The Mustangs beat Proviso East 186-248 on Thursday.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners placed 17th out of 25 teams at the Wheeling Invite at Chevy Chase Country Club on Saturday. Senior Kevin Saladino shot a 79 to lead Naz.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Lyons Township

The Lions placed third out of seven teams at West Chicago's Wildcat Invitational on Saturday. Megan Isaacson, Lizzie Everett, Mackenna Dunn and Kristen Young teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle relay. The same four were third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs took fourth at their own invite on Saturday after losing midweek meets to Oak Park River Forest and York.
