Lions lack rhythm in loss

WESTERN SPRINGS – On the first play from scrimmage, Lyons Township running back Leonard Ross scored on an 80-yard touchdown. After that, it was all Glenbard West.

The Hilltoppers’ defense shut down the Lions the rest of the way, and West won, 44-7, to sink LT in a 1-3 hole.

After the big play that got the home crowd rocking, Ross was limited to just five yards on his remaining 10 carries.

“Everybody knows about Leonard and they come flying,” LT coach Kurt Weinberg said. “They were pinching in and getting after us a little bit and took it to us. Offensively, we just didn’t get any kind of rhythm going.”

A.J. Villarreal intercepted a Drew Vogg pass on Glenbard West’s first possession, but the Hilltoppers’ defense forced a three-and-out and Levonte Jones tied the game with a seven-yard run on West’s next drive.

The Hilltoppers took the lead on a low snap on a punt that resulted in a safety on the first play of the second quarter. West scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the half and then running back Scott Andrews scored two third-quarter touchdowns to put the game away.

Andrews ran for 206 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead West’s offense.

While it was the third game this season where the Lions’ defense gave up more than 40 points, Weinberg refused to put the loss on the defense. LT forced three turnovers while the game still was within reach, but the offense couldn’t turn those turnovers into points.

“In the first half I thought we played very well defensively,” Weinberg said. “We were in the ball game even though we were sputtering a little bit offensively. I think we just got worn down a little bit. [West] is a fast team and eventually they just took it to us and they beat us up.”

The road to recovery becomes a steeper climb after another loss and another strong opponent awaits on Friday.

Downers Grove North is coming off its second straight loss, but still possesses a good quarterback in Dave Edwards and a talented defense that has two shutouts so far.

Hinsdale Central and Oak Park River Forest follow on the Lions’ schedule. LT will need to win at least two of those three games to remain eligible for the playoffs.
