Prep Roundup: LT, Morton soccer win Pepsi Showdown openers

BOYS SOCCER

Lyons Township

The Lions picked up two conference wins over Oak Park River Forest and York last week to continue the hot start to the season. LT beat the Huskies 5-2 with goals from Leo Gabrek, Pearman Clarke, Matt Murphy, Frankie Kocimski and Harry Hilling. On Thursday the Lions beat York 2-0 with Murphy and Hilling again finding the net and goalkeeper Peter Nolan earning his first shutout of the season. LT is now in the middle of the Pepsi Showdown. They beat Lake Forest Academy 7-0 in the opener and play Kelly on Tuesday.

Morton

The Mustangs beat Loyola 2-1 in the first round of the Pepsi Showdown on Saturday. They play Streamwood in Tuesday's second round.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs remained winless on the season following a 3-2 loss to Von Steuben on Thursday. RB is 0-5-3.

Nazareth

The Roadrunners enjoyed a winning weekend with a 2-0 win over Notre Dame on Friday and a 9-0 win over Westmont on Saturday. Mike Usher and Chris Tovar scored for Naz while Mike Zebrowski earned the shutout in the conference win over Notre Dame.

Fenwick

The Friars lost to Metea Valley 2-1 on penalty kicks in the first round of the Pepsi Showdown on Saturday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Lyons Township/Nazareth/Fenwick

Lyons Township hosted a quad on Friday with Nazareth, Fenwick and Normal visiting. Naz won all three matches at the quad with a sweep of Fenwick and three-game victories over LT and Normal. The Lions went 1-2 with a 25-18, 25-18 win over Fenwick. The Friars also went 1-2 with the lone win coming against Normal.

Riverside Brookfield

After an 0-2 start, including a conference loss to Illiana Christian, the Bulldogs rattled off six straight wins. RB swept Elmwood Park 25-14, 25-5 on Sept. 11 to even their Metro Suburban Conference record at 1-1. The Bulldogs then won the Leyden Tournament with sweeps over Willowbrook, Niles North, Addison Trail, Leyden and Westmont.

BOYS GOLF

Lyons Township

The Lions dropped a match against defending state champion Hinsdale Central on Thursday. LT scored a 155 at Hinsdale Golf Club only to be topped by the Red Devils' 144. Dan Hudson shot a 36 for LT's best round. John Hudson and Matt Walsh scored 39s.

Riverside Brookfield

In a 169-173 win over De La Salle on Sept. 11 Austin Adamec and Peter Smith both shot 39s. Smith's round was a career-best. Adamec led the way again with a 38 in a 174-176 win over Fenton a day later.

GIRLS GOLF

Lyons Township

Sarah Donahoe, Katie Dougherty, Jameson Mitchell and Ciara Rattana combined for a 159 to tie the all-time low team score for nine-holes at La Grange Country Club in a 159-201 win over Downers Grove South on Sept. 11.

GIRLS TENNIS

Morton

The Mustangs won the Oak Forest quad with a 3-0 record on Saturday.

Riverside Brookfield

The Bulldogs beat Proviso West 7-0 on Thursday and then placed fourth at the eight-team Willowbrook Invite on Saturday.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Lyons Township

The Lions placed fourth at the LT Relay Invitational behind Loyola, Rosary and Naperville Central. LT didn't win any events, but did pick up two second place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Morton

The Mustangs placed third at the Reavis Invitational, which opened the season.

Riverside Brookfield

RB was eighth out of 12 teams in the Hinsdale South Invite on Saturday. Sydney Veon swam a personal best time in the 100-yard freestyle to make the all-time top ten list at RB.
