ELMHURST – The National Merit Scholarship Program recently announced seven York High School seniors as semifinalists in the annual competition.

Matthew Bindeman, Gloria Frank, Joseph Kesslering, Andrew Miranti, Matthew Niewiara, Eric Patterson and Paul Salamanca were named among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists.

Semifinalists continue to compete for 8,000 National Scholarships worth more than $35 million that will be offered in the spring. About 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level where about half of them will win a scholarship.

Less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors scores high enough on the PSAT to qualify as a semifinalist. Once selected as semifinalists, students must fulfill several more requirements to become finalists.
