Miscues cost Blazers in defeat to DGS

ADDISON – Right now, Addison Trail is fighting an uphill battle every week thanks to self-inflicted wounds.

For the third week in a row Addison Trail gave up an early score and trailed the rest of the game. The Blazers trailed by 26 points before finally getting on the board in a 40-21 loss to Downers Grove South on Sept. 13.

“We got ourselves behind the eight ball and we struggled to get out of the hole,” AT coach Paul Parpet Jr said. “It always seems like once one thing goes bad, a lot of things go bad.”

Downers Grove South (1-2, 1-0 West Suburban Gold) forced Addison Trail (0-3, 0-1 WSG) to punt after a three-and-out on the opening drive and blocked the ensuing punt. DGS capitalized with a touchdown.

The next drive AT earned a first down, but netted just four yards on the drive. DGS capitalized with another touchdown.

Before the fans in Addison had anything positive to cheer about the Blazers were down 14-0 and the excitement of the home opener and conference opener washed away.

“The offense came out slow,” AT quarterback Mike Rybarczyk said. “We didn’t really help our defense out. They had good field position on us and they took advantage.”

By the time the Blazers finally scored on a 1-yard run by Jim Wislek, there was less than a minute left in the first half, and the Mustangs led 26-7.

Even then, DGS managed to score another touchdown before halftime thanks in part to a big kickoff return by Alec Arvanitakis.

AT fell behind 40-7 before fourth-quarter touchdowns by Malik Pierre-Louis and Wislek gave the Blazers some consolation. Pierre-Louis was one of the bright spots on the day. The sophomore ran for 65 yards on eight carries.

The Blazers enter tonight’s game against Leyden, also winless, without having led in a game yet. One bright spot has been Rybarczyk’s consistent play at quarterback.

He is 43-for-59 for 517 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in his first three varsity starts.

“I’ve always been a confident player,” Rybarczyk said. “We just got to come together as a unit.”
