DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove North High School is inviting the community to hear former NBA player Chris Herren give a talk about the dangers of drug use.

The free event is at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the high school.

Herren will tell the story of his rise to the NBA, his defeat to alcohol and drug addiction and his eventual rebound in recovery.

Herren is the author of “Basketball Junkie” and the subject of the ESPN film, “Unguarded.” Students at both schools will hear his presentation during school as part of “Red Ribbon Week,” an alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention awareness campaign that takes place every October.

“Bringing in an outside speaker, in particular one who is a celebrity, reinforces the messages we give to students every day about the importance of making healthful choices,” says Keith Bullock, student assistance coordinator at North High, in a press release. “Through education, prevention is our hope and mission.”

Questions about the presentation or the district’s student support services can be directed to Keith Bullock at bullock@csd99org or 630-795-8488; or Diana Benoist at dbenoist@csd99.org or 630-795-8588.
