Fenwick remains perfect; St. Joe picks up first win

Proviso West and Naz drop conference openers

Fenwick 28, Brother Rice 20: Fenwick continued its hot start to the season by beating Brother Rice, a team from the more prestigious Chicago Catholic League Blue. Running back Robert Spillane caught two touchdowns from quarterback Gino Cavalieri and ran in another score. Cavalieri had three touchdowns, with the other going to Pat Donahue for 45 yards. Fenwick is 3-0 and enters Catholic League White play this week against Bishop McNamara.

Week 4: Fenwick vs. Bishop McNamara

Marist 45, Nazareth 37: The Roadrunners put up a valiant effort against Marist, but were unable to pick up the road win in the East Suburban Catholic opener for both teams. Naz running back Daniel Bakovich scored a touchdown in the first quarter to tie the game at 6-6, but the Redhawks earned some separation on a 69-yard touchdown reception and a 97-yard kickoff return by Flynn Nagel. The Roadrunners trailed 28-9, but fought back to take a 31-28 lead in the third quarter after a touchdown run by Cyle Tucker and two by freshman Ivory Kelly-Martin. The Redhawks (3-0, 1-0 ESCC) regained the lead with two more touchdowns and withstood another Naz rally that included Tucker’s second TD.

Oak Park River Forest 29, Proviso West 6: The Panthers fell to 1-2 on the season in the West Suburban Silver opener for both teams. The Huskies jumped ahead on a safety and two touchdowns before Dennis Bryant Jr. hit Chance Haney for a third-quarter touchdown to cut the lead to 15-6. West could not score again in the loss.

St. Joseph 26, Elmwood Park 21: The Chargers picked up the first win of the season thanks to a 17-yard touchdown run by Brandon Johnson to give St. Joe the lead for good late in the fourth quarter. Johnson had two touchdowns on the day. Quarterback Casey Scalise also threw for a pair of scores.
