RIVERSIDE – Police announced that by working with police in Springdale, Ark., they have made an arrest of a Springdale resident.

The case in Riverside began on Aug. 5 when police were summoned to a home in the 500 block of Selborne after receiving a report of a deceptive practice incident involving a Craiglist posting.

The resident reported they had posted their car for sale and received a text message from someone interested in purchasing it. The intersted party told the resident at first that he lived in Los Angeles, Calif. When the victim asked to speak with the potential buyer via phone, the buyer told the resident he was deaf and there was a third party acting as an intermediate.

The purchaser sent a $2,100 check, which was more than the agreed upon price. The resident refunded the difference through a MoneyGram from Walmart to the purchaser. The refund check cleared, but the purchaser's check did not and was found to be fraudulent.

Riverside police were able to trace the text message to a phone number listed for an address in Springdale, Ark. and contacted local police to assist in the investigation.

Springdale police arrested William E. Kirk, 47, of the 1400 block of Powell in Springdale. Kirk was charged with one count of theft by receiving.
