Downers Grove South offense breaks out in win at Addison Trail
Mustangs win conference opener 40-21
ADDISON – In its first two games Downers Grove South scored a total of 12 points. It took less than a quarter for the Mustangs to top that number against Addison Trail and they didn’t stop there.
The Mustangs had a break out offensive game in a 40-21 win over the host Blazers on Friday night.
Le’Devin Smith had three touchdowns and Alec Arvanitakis scored two to spark the Mustangs (1-2, 1-0 West Suburban Gold). Smith had both first quarter touchdowns on runs of four and eight yards.
“It felt really good,” Smith said. “We know that our offense is working together as one now and getting on a better page and keeping up the pace. Now we know what it takes to score this many points.”
The Blazers (0-3, 0-1 WSG) went three-and-out on the opening drive of the game and Idony Owens blocked the ensuing punt to set DGS up with great field position.
Smith scored his first TD and then another short AT drive followed by another Smith TD put the Blazers in an early hole.
“The offense came out slow tonight,” said AT quarterback Mike Rybarczyk. “We didn’t really help our defense out. They had good field position on us and they took advantage.”
Arvanitakis added his two scores in the second quarter on an 8-yard run and a 50-yard reception to build a 26-0 lead.
Jim Wislek scored from a yard out with 59 seconds left in the half to put the Blazers on the board, but Arvanitakis had a big kickoff return to give the Mustangs time to score. Two plays later Quarterback Jordan Skach hit Javon Turner for a 22-yard touchdown.
Smith added his third touchdown to make it 40-7 in the third quarter before late touchdowns by Malik Pierre-Louis and Jim Wislek gave AT some consolation.
“I feel good for our kids because we’ve been preaching work hard, work hard and good things will happen,” said DGS coach Mark Molinari. “I think they finally got their reward tonight.”
