Accused murderer Bassaly claims cameras in court could endanger his family
BURR RIDGE – Michael Bassaly, the man accused of killing his mother Aug. 29 in Burr Ridge, pleaded not guilty to all five counts of first-degree murder on Friday at the DuPage County Courthouse via his attorney Marc Wolfe.
The 27-year-old Downers Grove man allegedly shot his mother, Yvonne Bassaly, in the head around 1 a.m. at the St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church parking lot, 15w455 79th St. Yvonne Bassaly was pronounced dead at 1:42 a.m. at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, said Burr Ridge Deputy Chief Marc Loftus.
Prosecutors said Michael Bassaly confessed to being involved in an illegal scheme, which involved fake applications for asylum. Bassaly was also being investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. He allegedly confessed that he feared he would be arrested soon, and planned to kill his mother and himself.
