Prep roundup: West soccer blanks Hinsdale South

Glenbard West’s boys soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Hinsdale South Saturday behind a pair of goals from David Ortega. William Lanzillo also found the back of the net.

Glenbard West beat Oak Park, 2-1, via penalty kicks in a West Suburban Silver matchup Sept. 12. Lanzillo scored during regulation for Glenbard West before the squad won, 4-3, in penalty kicks.

Ortega, Ivan Barajas, Mario Sotelo and Lanzillo all converted their chances.

BOYS SOCCER

Glenbard South

The Raiders fell by a 4-0 margin to Geneva Monday.

Glenbard South tied Plainfield Central, 0-0, in a non-conference match on Sept. 12.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Glenbard South

The Glenbard South girls volleyball team cruised to another tournament championship, going a perfect 5-0 at Saturday’s Aurora Christian Invite.

The Raiders beat McHenry, Harvard, Hampshire, Aurora Christian and Woodstock and improved to 17-2 on the fall.

Tarah Valdez topped the squad with 30 kills while Kenzie Watterson totaled 28. Sydney Bauman posted 20 kills, Alex LaPonte dished out 84 assists and Katy Brainerd added 21 assists.

Glenbard West

The Hilltoppers came in third place at the Effingham Crossroads Classic over the weekend in an event featuring 24 teams.

Glenbard West lost to Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in the semifinals before coming back to defeat Lexington Henry Clay in the third-place match.

GIRLS GOLF

Glenbard South

The Raiders beat Plainfield East 206-244 in a dual meet on Sept. 11. Lilly Mittenthal topped all players with a 48.

BOYS GOLF

Glenbard South

The Raiders came in 12th place with a score of 348 at the Rockford East Invite on Saturday.

Russel Matos came in 11th individually with a 78 and Christopher Dufort was 35th with an 85.

Competing in a triangular meet with Lake Park and Addison Trail, Glenbard South placed first with a team score of 149 on Sept. 11. Matos posted a 34 and Michael Witterberg and Kevin Uvodich each had a 37.

FIELD HOCKEY

Behind a pair of goals from Hannah Paterakis, the Hilltoppers beat Elgin Academy, 3-0, on Sept. 12. Emma Winans had a goal and an assist.

GIRLS TENNIS

Glenbard South

The Raiders dropped a 5-2 decision to Wheaton North on Sept. 12. Alaina Gillespie was victorious in two sets at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Rettger and Jenna Brambora emerged with a 6-2, 6-1 win.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Glenbard West

The Hilltoppers came in 12th at the First to the Finish Invitational in Peoria with a score of 406. Paul Christian topped the squad with his 23rd-place finish in 15:17.96. Eric Neumann was 75th.

Glenbard South

Receiving a top-10 finish from Joe Singleton, the Raiders placed 15th at the First to the Finish Invitational in Peoria Saturday.

Singleton was ninth in 15:22.84. Joe Meade came in 39th in 15:55.08.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Glenbard West

With Linsday Graham grabbing the individual title by over 19 seconds, the Hilltoppers captured the title at the Lake Park Invite Saturday.

Glenbard West finished with a score of 45, easily outdistancing runner-up St. Charles North (114).

Graham covered the course in 17:08.4. She was followed by Lisa Luczak in third, Grace Rogers in seventh, Megan Ozog in 13th and Janie Nabholz in 21st.

Glenbard South

Backed by a 12th-place finish by Diane Lipa, the Raiders were the runner-up at the 51-team First to the Finish Invitational in Peoria Saturday.

Following Lipa was Elizabeth Niedert in 25th place and Caroline Aslasky in 35th. Becca Sippel was 42nd.
