Cross country preview: Postseason success a possibility for Panthers' runners

CAROL STREAM – The starting gun has gone off on the cross country season. The boys and girls teams at Glenbard North have experienced lead runners that could have the Panthers on pace for postseason success.

Glenbard North boys

Conference: DuPage Valley

Head coach: Mark Karwowski

2012 results: 7th in DVC, 7th in regional

Top runners:

Joey Campagna, jr.

Dennis Jenkins, sr.

Andrew Krohn, sr.

Chris Marshall, jr.

Isaac Medina, sr.

Kevin Panuska, jr.

Outlook: Glenbard North returns a solid core of runners who are looking to better last year’s seventh-place finishes in the DuPage Valley Conference and at the Wheaton North Class 3A regional.

“[Our runners] have put in some quality miles this summer and have really been busting their butt thus far,” coach Mark Karwowski said. “I’m looking forward to our upcoming competitions with Peoria and Bartlett around the corner.”

Leading the charge for the Panthers is junior Joey Campagna. Behind him is a group that includes seniors Isaac Medina, Andrew Krohn and Dennis Jenkins and juniors Kevin Panuska and Chris Marshall.

“My top runner has been doing very well and has a pretty solid No. 1 spot on our team,” the coach said. “My second and third runners are pretty close to each other, it’ll be interesting to see ... where they end up week by week.

“We need some standout performances from my fourth and fifth man; we still have a decent gap from two to five and will need them to really step up this year if we want to make progressions in our conference.”

Glenbard North girls

Conference: DuPage Valley

Head coach: Eric Day

2012 results: 8th in DVC

Top runners:

Simone Carr, sr.

Jaclyn Dziewior, jr.

Lisa Lubben, jr

Roshelle Rodriguez, jr.

Outlook: This will be a building year for a Panthers’ team whose roster includes only four seniors and a good amount of freshmen.

One decorated runner who returns is senior Simone Carr, who was a sectional qualifier in cross country last year before receiving a state medal in track in the 400-meter dash.

Glenbard North should receive a boost from junior Jaclyn Dziewior, who missed last season due to injury but was a member of the Panthers’ 4x800-meter relay in the spring. Others who should contribute include juniors Lisa Lubben and Roshelle Rodriguez and freshmen Ellie Castellon and Suzy Lukic.

“I will be looking for Simone and Jaclyn to race well individually and for other athletes to step up and support them for team scoring,” coach Eric Day said.

“This will be a development year for most of the team, but I would like to see Simone and Jaclyn race well at the DVC meet and at the regional and sectional.”
