Berwyn's Autre Monde hosts book signing, 'vegetable-centric' luncheon

BERWYN - Berwyn's Autre Monde Café & Spirits may be the perfect place for a book signing and lecture by author and gardening expert Jeanne Nolan.

On Oct. 5, chefs Dan Pancake and Beth Partridge will serve a three-course vegetable-centric brunch menu during Nolan's lecture on how to put your garden “to sleep” for the Chicago winter from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Autre Monde Cafe & Spirits, 6727 W. Roosevelt Road, Berwyn.

The cost to attend is $60 per person, and are available at www.brownpapertickets.com. Included in the ticket price are the lecture, a three-course local farm brunch with lemon thyme sparkling cocktails and fresh juice and a signed copy of Nolan’s book. Tickets can be purchased at the restaurant as well.

The event is part of Autre Monde’s green-focused event programming launched in conjunction with their Green Seal Certification, which began with a wine dinner featuring natural wines.

Christine Tully Aranza, owner and operator of Autre Monde, said almost all of their events this year have had green themes.

"The first was a green cocktail class; learning how to make cocktails with your own herbs for the summer," she said. "We did a natural wine dinner last month, and we will be doing another one of those in November."

Aranza said the concept has been working really well.

"Part of our concept of being a neighborhood restaurant is to be good to the environment around us and to help others do that, too," she said. "It's been very well received."

Nolan is founder of The Organic Gardener Ltd., and has designed and cultivated more than 650 farms and food gardens in and around Chicago – in downtown parks, public school yards, inner-city shelters, on restaurant rooftops, townhouse terraces and suburban estates. 

She is also the designer of and project manager for The Edible Gardens at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, which is part of a nationwide initiative urging people to change the way they think about food.

Her book, "From the Ground Up: A Food Grower's Education in Life, Love and the Movement That's Changing the Nation," Nolan shows how easy it s to grow the vegetables wherever we live.
