Wheaton man sentenced for leaving scene of fatal 2009 crash

A Wheaton man was sentenced to nine years in prison for leaving the scene of a fatal crash, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

Kevin McCartney, 23, entered a guilty plea to one count of failure to report a crash involving death in a trial on April 23. He was sentenced Sept. 11.

McCartney and Gregory Hoctor, then 18, attended a party on Oct. 4, 2009 in Wheaton. At some point during the evening, the two left the party in McCartney's vehicle. Later that evening, McCartney returned to the party, claiming that Hoctor had stolen his car.

The next morning, Wheaton police found McCartney's vehicle with Hoctor still inside. Hoctor died from his injuries later that day, the release said. Investigators determined that McCartney had been with Hoctor at the time of the crash but had left the scene without notifying authorities.

McCartney will be required to serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
