Lombard, Villa Park students selected as National Merit semifinalists

LOMBARD – Wednesday morning, three students from the Lombard and Villa Park communities were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In all, about 16,000 high school students from across the state were selected.

Ibrahiem Mohammad from the College Preparatory School of America, Dana Schiewe from Glenbard East High School and Emily Gornick from Willowbrook High School were selected for the recognition.

As semifinalists, the student have the opportunity to complete specific requirements and advance to the finalist round, where they will be considered for National Merit Scholarships valued at about $35 million.

The semifinalists were preliminary evaluated for the competition after taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test last year as juniors. To advance to the final round, students and their high schools must complete applications that includes academic information, community involvement, leadership abilities, employment, honors and awards.

The National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April.
