Heat forces Dist-101 schools to close early Wednesday

WESTERN SPRINGS – District 101 schools will close early Wednesday after the district recorded temperatures higher than 90 degrees in some second-floor classrooms.

Superintendent Brian Barnhart said the district's four schools will close around mid-day but will offer child care in air-conditioned areas to students whose families cannot arrange to pick them up early.

None of the district's classrooms have air conditioning, though some common areas do. Three straight days of excessive heat without much evening relief caused second-floor classrooms at McClure Junior High and Laidlaw Elementary to reach 90-plus temperatures Tuesday, prompting the district to notify parents that it would close early Wednesday.

A scheduled water-flushing operation Monday at Laidlaw had yellow-brown water coming out of the faucets. The district then bought more than 1,000 water bottles as a precautionary measure, about half of which were sent to Laidlaw.

The district has also modified its physical education classes this week, keeping students outside for less time. One class did yoga in a classroom, Barnhart said.
