Defending Class 2A cross country individual champion John Wold returns for a Glenbard South team that again has state aspirations, while Glenbard West also hopes to make it back to Peoria.

Glenbard South Raiders

Conference: Metro Suburban

Head coach: Doug Gorski

2012 results: 1st in MSC, 2nd in regional, 2nd in sectional, 5th in Class 2A

Top runners:

Ricardo Hilliard, sr.

Andrew Kladiva, sr.

Joe Meade, sr.

Joe Singleton, sr.

John Wold, sr.

Outlook: There are two storylines to watch this fall with the Raiders, the first being whether senior John Wold can repeat as the Class 2A individual champion. The second involves the team aspect as Glenbard South looks to improve on its top-five state finish from a year ago.

Along with Wold, Joe Singleton also returns after placing sixth in Class 2A last fall. Andrew Kladiva (55th) and Joe Meade (161st) also have state experience.

The team is also shooting for its fourth straight Metro Suburban Conference title, though Illiana Christian is expected to provide stiff competition.

“In order to have a chance at a trophy this November, we need to close the gap between John and Joe and the rest of our pack,” coach Doug Gorski said. “That means we need to stay healthy, work hard and get faster.”

Glenbard West Hilltoppers

Conference: West Suburban Silver

Head coach: Kyle Nugent

2012 results: 4th in WSS, 2nd in regional, 5th in sectional, 13th in Class 3A

Top runners:

Chris Buechner, jr.

Paul Christian, jr.

Eric Neumann, so.

Outlook: The Hilltoppers return three of their top seven runners from a group that qualified for the Class 3A state meet in 2012.

Leading the way is junior Chris Buechner, who finished 82nd at state last fall. Also back is junior Paul Christian (117th) and Eric Neumann (133rd).

“We are very excited to get this year going,” said coach Kyle Nugent. “We have a slew of juniors and a group seniors who are in the mix. The summer was great as our top group was bigger than ever. We are eager to start racing.”

St. Francis Spartans

Conference: Suburban Christian

Head coach: Scott Nelson

2012 results: 4th in regional, 4th in sectional, 23rd in state

Top runners:

Daniel Cady, jr.

Mike Deaton, sr.

Andrew Hallet, sr.

Matt Lorish, sr.

Nick Vilimek, sr.

Outlook: Optimism should be quite high within the Spartans program as the team returns five of their top seven runners from a group that placed 23rd in Class 2A last fall.

Andrew Hallet led St. Francis with a 79th-place state finish and he is back along with Nick Vilimek (117th), Matt Lorish (131st), Daniel Cady (174th) and Mike Deaton (181st).
