BOLINGBROOK – Students and teachers at Bolingbrook's Pioneer Elementary School are planning a patriotic tribute to honor America's first responders and the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

On Wednesday, Patriot Day, each class at Pioneer will wear either red, white or blue, and at 2:15 p.m., the student body will assemble on the lawn and spelling out "USA.

An annual tradition at the Bolingbrook elementary school, Pioneer Assistant Principal Jeff Mitchem explains that the memorial is a learning experience for children who were not alive or do not remember Sept. 11.

"Some of our students are not aware of the tragedy that struck our country that day," Mitchem said. "In an effort to recognize and honor those who perished that day, and the brave individuals who responded that day, we will continue our tradition of representing our country with our own symbol of patriotism."
