Berwyn welcomes new medical center for seniors

BERWYN – If you've waited longer than 16 minutes to see the doctor, you've waited too long.

Berwyn seniors and city officials turned out Tuesday for the grand opening of the JenCare Neighborhood Medical Center, located at 6326 Cermak Road.

Designed for moderate to low income seniors who are Medicare patients, the facility features a physician whose primary focus is seniors and will see patients the next business day and accepts Medicare.

Mayor Robert Lovero said the facility fits a real need in the community and also has made great use of an empty space on Cermak Road.

"We didn't have any medical care especially for seniors," he said.

Lovero also credited JenCare with holding a job fair in Berwyn to fill its staffing needs.

To date, there are eight people, including Dr. Merrill J. Zahtz, on staff. Additional staff will be added as the pateint list grows.

Doug Kessler, Chicago Market Sales Manager for JenCare, said the system is designed in such a way so patients will not be sitting in a waiting room more than 16 minutes before seeing the doctor. Patients are issued E-cards that they swipe when first arriving. Staff is immediately notified they have arrived and all medical records are put into the cue for easy access by staff.

At that time, the clock starts ticking.

If the patient has not moved through the system within the 16 minute limit, the national headquarters is alerted that the patient is still waiting and the problem is rectified.

The facility is self-inclusive and includes a pharmacy, laboratory and X-ray department, eliminating the need for seniors to have to make several stops at different locations.
