Soccer preview: Dukes hope for improvement

ELMHURST – After a tough 2012 that saw York’s boys soccer team go 0-6 in the West Suburban Silver for the second year in a row, the Dukes hope to improve with a senior-heavy roster.

Both all-conference performers from a year ago, Osmin Balderrama and Kevin Adame, graduated, leaving York with two holes to fill. However, 18 of the 21 players on York’s roster are seniors so experience won’t be the Dukes’ problem this season.

The speedy duo of Marcus Watkins and Victor Martinez gives the Dukes a difficult pair to mark in the attack. Midfielders Nick Gaudio and Corey McGovern will be crucial in giving that pair chances on goal.

In goal, senior Colin Weigel returns and has shared time with fellow senior Joao Sepulveda in early season matches.

The Dukes went 1-3 at Lake Park’s Norm Hillner Invite to start the season. York lost to Conant and Huntley 3-0 and lost to Lake Park 4-1 before winning its final match of the tournament on Saturday.
