Prep roundup: Rams volleyball posts winning tourney record
The Rams went 2-3 at the Conant Invite over the weekend and lost to West Aurora 25-23, 30-28 in a DuPage Valley Conference match on Tuesday. Meghan Hanewall, Allison Farrell and Sarah Murphy were the top offensive threats for Rams’ setter Sam Bell.
The Broncos won three more matches this week to improve to 9-0. Montini swept Kaneland 25-21, 25-23 with 15 digs from Bridget Lucas on Monday. Monica Loftus had six kills and three blocks in a 25-17, 25-18 win over Downers Grove South on Tuesday. Joyce Balash’s five kills contributed to a 25-20, 25-20 win over Wheaton Academy on Wednesday.
The Blazers went 3-2 at the Willowbrook Invite over the weekend to take third place. AT beat Mt. Assisi and Walther Lutheran while splitting two matches with the host Warriors. The Blazers also lost to Plainfield North. Sophomore Nina Capuani had 30 kills and Juliana Selvaggi added 28 to lead AT at the tournament. On Tuesday they opened up West Suburban Gold play with a 25-18, 25-23 win over Morton. Maine East beat them 25-21, 25-20 the next day.
Hinsdale South topped the Warriors 25-15, 25-10 on Tuesday in the first West Suburban Gold match of the season.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Vince Booth finished 14th at Fenton’s Early Bird Invitational. He completed the race in 16:09.5. Fellow senior Jack Peters was 34th as the Rams placed 10th.
By crossing the finish line in 43rd place, Luis Miranda was Addison Trail’s top runner at the Early Bird Invitational at Fenton.
Jimmy Funteas was 18th at the Lions Pride Invitational with a time of 15:46.15. The Warriors were 10th as a team.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Yoselin Toledo was the Rams’ top finisher at Fenton’s Early Bird Invitational. Her time of 20:20.1 was good for 33rd in the 22-team invite. The Rams were 11th as a team.
Brittany Fisher placed fourth for the Broncos with a time of 18:34 at the 13-team Leavey Invitational at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles. Fellow senior Maggie Hallerud was 10th to help Montini place eighth overall.
Alex Keefe had a big week for the Broncos. Keefe was the medalist against Marmion on Monday with a 35. The Broncos lost the match on a fifth scorecard after tying 158-158. The next day Keefe again posted the low score of 38 in a 160-178 win over IC Catholic. On Wednesday St. Francis beat the Broncos 161-179.
The Warriors improved to 5-0 in dual matches with a 151-191 win over Morton on Wednesday. Mark Fratto scored a 34 to win match medalist.
The Rams picked up a pair of dual meet wins earlier in the week. They edged past Glenbard North 199-200 on Monday and beat Wheaton North 185-188 on Wednesday.
Those wins evened East’s DVC record at 2-2.
The Warriors beat Leyden 4-3 in a West Suburban Gold dual on Tuesday in the first conference match of the season. Willowbrook topped West Chicago 5-1 on Wednesday.
