Willowbrook senior quarterback Brian Johnson blew away the known state passing record for yards in a game by throwing for 675 and seven touchdowns in a 62-49 win at Lyons Township on Sept. 6. Johnson, who was 40-for-52 passing, went well past the previous record of 590 yards by Wes Lunt of Rochester in 2011. The Villa Park resident's mind-blowing numbers will give him a boost while he tries to find a school to play college football at. Johnson, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about his big game.
Have you ever been in a high-scoring shootout like that before?
Not that many points. Last year we had a game where we had 83 points in a game (a 42-41 win over Glenbard East last year), but that's really the most we've had total.
What are your current college prospects?
I've been to a few camps, but that's mainly my goal this year is just to get looks.
After losing in Week 1 how were you able to turn it around in such a big way?
We had a better practice week. I feel like overall they were more intense. The first week it just seemed like we were slow and we weren't ready for the game. That showed on the field. We were really slow and we weren't executing right. The LT week we had great practices, we were executing just like we planned to.
