Big Silver showdown on tap as West visits DGN

GLEN ELLYN – Having watched Downers Grove North on tape and in person, Chad Hetlet has yet to find a weakness.

The only question is, will the Glenbard West coach be saying the same thing Friday night?

Fresh off a 68-7 victory over Morton which evened their record at 1-1, the Hilltoppers open West Suburban Silver conference play Friday against the undefeated and highly regarded Trojans.

Downers Grove North has yet to allow a point on the season, outscoring Lockport and Hinsdale South by a 73-0 margin.

“They look like a great football team,” Hetlet said. “They are very stout defensively, [quarterback David]Edwards is a monster. Their O-line is good, their running backs are tough. And they are well-coached. [John] Wander is one of the best coaches in the state. When he has got a guy like Edwards, they are tough to beat.

“We will have to play our best game.”

Drew Vogg, who has taken over as the starting quarterback this fall, understands the challenge his team faces.

“Downers Grove North is always a tough team,” the senior said. “They have a really good quarterback who likes to run, he is a physical kid. And it’s the first week of conference which is always fun.”

Vogg also mentioned that Hetlet reminded the team that the Trojans would have extra incentive, having not beaten the Hilltoppers since 2006.

“That will be on the forefront of their minds,” Vogg said. “We are going to have to play our physical run game and hit some play-action.”

Running back Scott Andrews has seen the rankings that have Downers Grove North ahead of Glenbard West and also has heard people say the Trojans are the conference favorites. He hopes the Hilltoppers can change that.

“If we keep working hard, we can get it,” Andrews said. “And we’ve got to out-physical them.”
