Several Wheaton high school students were named as semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program, according to a news release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Seventeen high school seniors in total were named to the prestigious list, including students at St. Francis, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South high schools.

About 16,000 semifinalists were named nationwide. They will have the chance to win about 8,000 scholarships worth $35 million. To be considered, students had to score well on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

To become a finalist, the semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application. About 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level. The finalists will be announced in February.
