York runs all over Proviso East for second win
Dukes beat Pirates 52-22 with 326 rushing yards
ELMHURST – It took more than a season for York to get its first win under coach Steve Nye.
It took six days to get win No. 2.
The Dukes run-heavy offense dominated against Proviso East in a 52-22 West Suburban Conference crossover Friday night in Elmhurst. York is now 2-0 after a 0-9 record in 2012.
York ran for 326 yards and used five different running backs, Kyle Coughlin, Kyle Stearns, Dominic Ravenna, Morgan Alexander and Joseph Biggins.
“That’s what we want to be, a ball control team,” Nye said. “We made some mistakes. We’re not used to playing with the lead and things like that. We were 0-9 last year so some of those things we got to learn still.”
Stearns intercepted a pass on the first play of the game and on the ensuing drive scored on an 18-yard run. Mike Kosanovich picked off a pass on the Pirates’ next drive to set up another rushing touchdown from Stearns.
Stearns finished with 82 yards rushing on 16 carries and had three touchdowns. He also had two interceptions.
“Every win is unbelievable,” Stearns said. “It was a rough year last year so hopefully we got many more to come, but 2-0 is a good start.”
Touchdowns by Jeff Ostling, Coughlin and Kyle Preuss helped the Dukes take a 35-6 lead into halftime. The Pirates (0-2) scored two touchdowns early in the third quarter to cut the score to 35-22, but a field goal by Charlie Rose and TD runs by Rose and Stearns sealed the game in the fourth quarter.
York hosts Hinsdale Central (1-1) in the West Suburban Silver opener next Friday.
