Village’s first Bed and Breakfast rules outlined

RIVERSIDE – The Riverside Board of Trustees debated the rules for the 138-year-old village’s first Bed and Breakfasts, which could be allowed pending approval of a town ordinance.

At issue was where possible Bed and Breakfasts could be established and if people living next to a would-be B&B could object to one’s opening.

“If someone proposed a bed and breakfast next door to you, do you think that should have a public hearing?” Trustee Douglas Pollack asked his fellow board members at their public meeting Thursday night. “Is that something a resident should have an opportunity to weigh in on?”

Village Trustee Patricia Collins said she believes the ordinance is written in such a way that any potential Bed and Breakfasts would not be a nuisance for neighbors.

“It deals with itself because of the regulations,” Collins said, noting smaller properties that are close together would be forbidden.

Pollack said they might want to only permit Bed and Breakfasts near downtown Riverside to promote local businesses.

“We live in a town that is basically a 1.5 mile square, so pretty much any house is going to be within a half mile of downtown,” Trustee Joseph Ballerine said.

The ordinance effecting Bed and Breakfasts will be debated further at the next board meeting.
