Village of Hinsdale to start spraying pesticides

HINSDALE – On or after Sept. 9, the village of Hinsdale will apply chemical pesticides to control weeds in the area.

“We recommend withholding any activities in those areas for 24 hours afterwards,” said Village Horticulturalist Ralph Nikischer.

The chemical pesticides will be sprayed at the Memorial Building, Burlington Park, Symonds Drive, the police and fire building, Pierce Park, West Hinsdale Station, Hinsdale Avenue (Garfield-Stough), Chicago Avenue at BNRR, Highland Park, Washington lot, Lincoln lot, village lot and west of Post Circle, according to the village's website.

“In addition to the notification on the village website, I will be posting signs at each location given the time of the application and the 24-hour period afterwards in which we recommend to keep off the lawn or turf area,” Nikischer said.

TriPower Selective Herbicide will be used, which will be applied as a liquid spray or from a truck mounted boom. Nikischer said the village has reduced its use of sprayed pesticides over the years.

“In the past we've sprayed up to 80 acres of weeds, or even 100 before my time, and now we've reduced that to under 20 this fall,” he said.
