District 200 to address 21st century parenting this fall

Parenting can be a difficult job.

In light of that reality, Community Unit School District 200 will continue its series of parenting seminars this fall.

Topics ranging from setting expectations, social media, drug use and communication will be discussed in an array of talks in the coming months. The series starts at 12 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Wheaton Community Center with the seminar "Mental Health and Adolescence: Do I Need to Worry?" according to a district news release.

Donna Kozica, the chair of the D-200 Social Work Department and coordinator for the seminar, said that the district tried to gauge from parents what topics they think are important.

"There are a lot of challenges to raising young people today, and we really try to give parents as much hands-on strategies as they can utilize," she said.

D-200 uses district professionals and other experts to lead the free seminars, Kozica said. Speakers use research, experience and firsthand knowledge to present to crowds as large as 75 parents.

"It's helpful to listen to somebody who has some expertise in the field on what to look for and how to support your child," she said.
