More than $70k in jewelry reported stolen in alleged home burglary in Downers Grove
DOWNERS GROVE – Two elderly residents of a home on Candlewood Drive told Downers Grove police they suspect a woman who claimed to be looking for a lost cat either stole or helped an accomplice steal more than $70,000 in jewelry around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
A male resident of the home told police a woman came to his door acting hysterical and crying. She said her cat was missing and she needed help finding it. The man helped the woman look for the cat in his yard for about 15 minutes.
After failing to find the cat, the man went back inside, he told police. The woman came back a short time later, and he invited her into the house and she wrote a name and phone number on an envelope in case he found the cat.
When the man's wife came home later, she had a "bad feeling" about what happened, police said.
She searched her upstairs bedroom and found her jewelry boxes were in "disarray."
The couple reported more than 24 pieces of jewelry missing, including a $33,350 gold Rolex watch and a gold diamond ring valued at $10,000. The total value of the stolen jewelry, including two wedding rings, several gold necklaces and earrings, was estimated at about $70,000.
The woman who claimed to be looking for a cat was described as being in her 40s with brown hair and of either Asian or Hispanic descent.
Police did not provide the address or block of the alleged burglary.
