Soccer preview: Defense the strength for Tigers in 2013

WHEATON – The Wheaton Warrenville South boys soccer team is coming off a successful 2012 campaign in which the Tigers finished third in the DuPage Valley Conference before capturing a regional title.

Eight players return from that squad so matching those accomplishments isn’t out of the question.

“Our defense will return the greatest number of players,” said coach Guy Callipari, “and their experience will allow us to acclimate through the middle and offensive third of the field.”

In the back, Wheaton Warrenville South returns a pair of senior captains in Mike Stelletello and Joey Spera. Junior forward Jurguen Guzman and junior midfielder Ian Daniels are also back while contributions are expected from junior midfielder Elliot Kettle, who did not play for South a season ago.

Wheaton Warrenville South was 1-3-1 heading into action this week. The Tigers beat Hinsdale South 2-1 to open the season before being shut out in losses to Barrington, Lake Zurich and Marmion. The squad then tied Crystal Lake South 0-0 on Saturday.
