Montini junior outside hitter Monica Loftus led the Broncos to the title at Wheaton North’s Blue and Gold Invite over the weekend. The Broncos went 5-0 in the season-opening tournament, swept all five opponents and currently hold a 6-0 record. Loftus, who plays club ball for 1st Alliance, was one of three Broncos on the all-tournament team and took home MVP honors. The Lombard resident already has three Division I scholarship offers and hopes to commit soon. Loftus, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about her and the Broncos’ hot start to the season.
What has been the key to the team’s hot start to the season?
It’s been a good year for us because now all of us are seniors and juniors. Last year we were a young team, but we’ve definitely progressed and now we’re showing that we’re better.
Has the recruiting process been more stressful or fun?
Definitely stressful. I just want it to be over with because it’s just so much. All of these schools are emailing me. I had to call everyone and I hate talking on the phone. It’s just really stressful, but I’m glad that it’s almost over.
What are your goals for the year?
I would say a team goal is to at least get to state and hopefully win. I can see us winning. That’s not what I said last year, but this year we definitely have a shot.
