Villa Park garage sale to benefit terminally ill woman, York alumna

VILLA PARK – Money raised at a garage sale this weekend in Villa Park will be used to benefit the organization Bring Kara Home, a movement of local community members working to move a terminally ill young woman from a nursing home in Chicago where she currently lives to a single-family home.

According to the organization's website, Kara Ann Koskela is 24-year-old York High School alumna with Leukodystrophy, or Vanishing White Matter Disease, a disorder that causes the white matter surrounding the brain to decrease over time, which results in seizures, mental impairment, loss of muscle tone and more.

There is no cure for this disease, and Koskela's family has started the campaign Bring Kara Home with the goal of raising enough money to build or buy a home and furnish it with the appropriate equipment to care for Koskela. When she can no longer live in the home, the family plans to put it in a trust to be turned over to the United Leukodystrophy Foundation.

The garage sale fundraiser will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 106 N. Yale St. in Villa Park.
