ELMHURST – The only thing wrong with the season-opening football game for IC Catholic was the weather.
The Knights trounced Noble Street Charter, 47-6, under cloudy skies Saturday. Aside from the weather, it was a perfect debut on the new field at the renovated Plunkett Park.
IC spread the ball around with three different players completing passes, seven different ball carriers and five different players scoring touchdowns.
“We were happy we were able to spread the ball around the way we did,” IC coach Bill Krefft said. “We had a lot of people step up and perform well. It wasn’t just one or two people.”
The defense was balanced as well with 21 Knights making tackles. IC recorded three sacks and had a 98-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Russ Ryan.
Sophomore Rhashaun Epting and senior Jack Copher shared quarterback duties. Epting threw for one touchdown and caught another from Sean Sutton. The versatile Epting, who was on the varsity basketball team in the winter, also played linebacker.
Copher, James Janowski, Sam Rose and Jordan Rowell also scored touchdowns, meaning many of the Knights got to celebrate the new field in style.
“It’s great having this field,” Copher said. “Everyone gets hyped up for it.”
With the field christened with a win, the Knights now face a much stiffer test. IC heads to Kaneland, a bigger school with a strong program.
The Knights know they are underdogs, but are trying to use that to their advantage.
“We’re all convinced that we can win,” senior Tommy Guinan said. “We’re embraced being the underdog and we’re looking forward to shocking them.”
“They’re strong everywhere,” Krefft said of Kaneland. “They’re a real good football team and we’re real happy to have the opportunity to play them.”
