Dukes drop Clark, get first win for coach

ELMHURST – York’s football team couldn’t wait for Week 1 for more reasons than the typical excitement over the start of a new season.

The Dukes knew they could beat Clark in the opener and wanted to erase the memory of 2012’s 0-9 record. They had to wait an extra day after lightning forced the original Friday night start to be shifted to Saturday, but once they finally kicked off the Dukes got past Clark, 55-8.

“It felt really good,” senior linebacker Joe Helton said. “It just felt like everything was going right. We actually came together as a team. We haven’t had that energy in a while. Once we got that out of the way our team has just gotten a huge rush of energy.”

York, a Class 8A school, overpowered Class 4A Clark. The Dukes scored 55 points while never passing the ball. Ted Harrold, Dominic Ravenna and Kyle Stearns shared a bulk of the carries.

Kyle Coughlin scored the opening touchdown on a 7-yard run. Morgan Alexander added two more and Kyle Stearns also found the end zone to make it 28-0 after the first quarter. The Dukes lined up in a power formation the entire game and dominated the line of scrimmage to allow the ball carriers to plow through the Clark defense.

The big win for York can ease the anxiety of going winless the previous year in coach Steve Nye’s first season. Next up is another game the Dukes have a good chance to win. Proviso East, another team that went winless in 2012 and loss to Nazareth 35-12 in its opener, travels to Elmhurst for a West Suburban Conference crossover.

“They’re going to be a very athletic team,” Helton said. “They’re going to be very physical, and we’re just going to have to step up on the defensive side. Really we’re just going to have to come together and stick to our responsibilities. Just keep doing what we’re doing.”
