Benet football pitches shutout, tops Downers Grove South in opener

Downers Grove South quarterback Jordan Skach evades the Benet rush in the Mustangs' 21-0 loss to the Redwings Saturday.

DOWNERS GROVE – Porter Ontko rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns, and Benet's defense limited Downers Grove South to just six yards on the ground as the Redwings topped the Mustangs 21-0 Saturday in the season opener.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday night, but weather postponed it to Saturday. Mother Nature still played a role Saturday, with lightning delaying kickoff and halting the game early in the second quarter.

Ontko scored on a 19-yard burst up the middle late in the first quarter for a 6-0 Benet lead and hit paydirt again with 5:21 left in the second on a 3-yard sweep. A two-point conversion put the Redwings ahead 14-0 at halftime.

The Mustangs' most promising drive came early in the fourth quarter. They drove to the Benet 7-yard line, but a delay of game penalty and incomplete passes on third and fourth down halted the march. Four plays later, Ontko broke off a 63-yard scoring run with 3:17 left in the game.

Quarterback Jordan Skach was 10-for-18 with 118 yards passing for South.

Downers Grove South (0-1) is scheduled to face host Proviso West Friday night while Benet (1-0) is slated to play its home opener against South Elgin.
