EVANSTON – There was one team from the area that got to play despite the weather in Chicagoland, and it was a game to remember.
Proviso West took the field at Evanston Friday night despite lightning in the area that caused a delayed start. As if the delay wasn't enough, the two teams needed three overtimes to decide a winner.
The host Wildkits came away 39-38 winners. By the time Evanston won on a two-point conversion in the third OT, the time was nearly midnight.
The Panthers (0-1) led 18-10 at halftime and 24-16 in the fourth quarter after a 33-yard touchdown run by Byron Jackson. The Wildkits (1-0) scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive and converted the two-point attempt to tie the score and eventually force overtime.
In the first OT both teams scored touchdowns. In the second extra period West blocked a field goal attempt, but the Evanston defense came up with an interception to keep the game alive.
In the third overtime, West scored a touchdown and made the extra point to lead 38-31. Evanston answered by scoring a touchdown and went for two to win the game.
