JOLIET – Police say a man tried to bring a handgun and ammunition into the Will County Courthouse on Tuesday.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said Malik Tribblet, 21, arrived to pay a traffic fine at 1:10 p.m. and set his backpack on the X-ray screening machine to pass through a security checkpoint.

Hoffmeyer said a security guard detained Tribblet and called deputies.

“Tribblet stated he inadvertently brought his 9-millimeter Glock with him to the courthouse,” Hoffmeyer said. The firearm was not loaded, but one loaded magazine and another containing five dummy rounds also were found in the backpack, according to Hoffmeyer.

Tribblet, who had a valid firearm owner’s identification card, was arrested on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon and booked into the county jail.
