Elmhurst resident wins award for sustainable design work

ELMHURST – Iowa State University’s College of Design recently honored an Elmhurst resident and business owner for his design work.

James Patchett, who holds a bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from Iowa State University, received the Christian Petersen Design Award from his alma mater.

Patchett founded one of the country’s first sustainable design firms in 1994. Conservation Design Forum renovates landscapes and has offices in Elmhurst and Ann Arbor, Mich. The firm emphasizes on sustainable site planning and development, advancing innovative water resource-management techniques, integrating native landscape systems and promoting ecological restoration strategies.

Conservation Design Forum also created one of the most famous green roofs in the world, which sits atop Chicago’s City Hall.

Patchett also co-founded Whole Systems Integration, which brings together more than a dozen leading U.S. sustainable design firms to provide services for high-performance projects.
